SAR (Search & Rescue)

National Ski Patrol California Office of Emergency Services Winter Search and Rescue South (Winter SAR) are looking for new members. Are you a back country enthusiast? Would you like to join a patrol that encompasses a wider area? Would you like to improve your back country skills with like-minded people? Maybe Winter SAR is for you. 

To become an active searcher you need:

• MTR II

• Avy I (Avy II preferred)

• Current OEC

• Current CPR

• Demonstrated abilities in:

  • Map and Compass / navigation

  • Rope work, knots, Z systems, belaying, and repelling

  • Climbing, Comfort with class 3, 4 and low class 5

  • Ice axe and crampons, travel and self-arrest

  • The ability to operate in any condition for three days with what you have in your pack.

Not quite there yet? We can help you gain proficiency. What is really needed is a willingness to learn and a desire to participate in high effort training. Trainings are once a month throughout the year, may be overnight, and may include night navigation, overnight travel in the local mountains or the Sierras, climbing and rope work at local areas and Joshua Tree, snow travel in the local mountains, and of course, SKIING!
